Review of Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004) by Jesse F — 26 Jul 2007
A little heavier on the philosophical aspects than the first, and unlike the first, people who are not fans of either cyberpunk or anime may not enjoy this one as much--still, I strongly recommend watching it.
For those who have difficulty understanding these movies, the two movies plus the series focus around one question: Can a machine have a soul? If you put a human mind into a machine, does the machine have a human soul, or a soul all its own? If you modify a human body until it becomes more machine than human, does it retain its soul? Does it retain its humanity? If a mind is no longer tied to it's body, is the soul tied to the mind? Or the body? Note that we are not talking about a soul in the Judeo-Christian sense, but rather in the sense of a kind of human identity.
In the movies they use the term "ghost". Note also that the movies merely pose the question and provide context, without attempting to answer it (surely an impossible task).
