Review of Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004) by A F — 02 Sep 2009
A procedural that could only take place within the GITS universe, revisiting some of the questions particular to Ghost in the Shell, but never answering them in a satisfactory manner. Or, to be more precise, the GITS universe assumes that one answer is true in order for it to even exist and pose the question in the first place. The story takes several moments to ask those questions, as if the answer is uncertain, but it isn't really, not within the universe. But this same critique could be levelled at any story that takes artificial intelligence seriously, and uses it to ask what is to be human and how do humans differ from machines.
Gorgeous visuals, and I liked the use of Cantonese by the computer(s) on the factory ship.
