Review of Ghost in the Shell (1995) by Christopher L — 27 May 2009
If you don't like anime but wish you did, start at "Cowboy Bebop," and if you are feeling a little more adventurous, continue on to "Ghost in the Shell." This movie has a clear plot, although it's harder to follow than something as straightforward and coherently conceived as "Bebop.
" Still, you have some reason to really believe that it shouldn't be totally straightforward and coherent, as the movie poses sometimes disturbing questions about the nature of consciousness, the continuity of the mind, and what makes a person who they are.
The animation is beautiful, the characters are intriguing, and the story is compelling. It's noticeably better than its sequel, but if you like this one and want more, check out especially the first season of the television spin-off "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.
