Review of Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999) by Mikko L — 15 May 2008
Ghost Dog is truly an extraordinary movie. It's kinda like Tarantino meets The Sopranos. All the ingredients for a good flick are there. The samurai philosophy, books, proper quantity and quality of movie violence, Italian mafia, and the eye for little details and small, intriguing stories within a story.
Should I make something out of those? For instance, what is it with everybody watching cartoons on TV all the time? Is there something profound behind some of the main characters watching the Itchy & Scratchy show? I for one don't know but I don't let that bother me.
Even the rap shit does not bother me. It's kinda funny see Italian wise guys sing rap. And this RZA, whoever he is, should I consider him as kosher? He does this mandatory rap shit in contemporary movies, and even for Tarantino in Kill Bill too.
Ok, he's done this rap shit also for 8 Mile, but maybe I should not rap about this rap shit too much for there isn't that much of it in the movie. (Enuff to make me started, it seems, though).
Well, Whitaker makes yet another strong performance. And Jarmusch another great flick. Just watch it, ok. BTW, why is it that great flicks like this don't make box office ratings go thru the roof? Beats me.
