Review of Ghajini (2008) by Praanesh K — 26 Dec 2008
Shocking, highly disappointing to see a perfectionist like Aamir Khan involved in such horrible filmmaking. The movie is basically a 90s action flick and nothing more. Short term memory loss and the concept of Memento are mere pawns to market this film.
Take away the memory loss and quite frankly this is nothing more than a tale of revenge, oh wait...even with that factor included it still is! This is another example of how the story becomes bigger than the character.
It is a pity because this is such an interesting character on paper and on film as observed in Memento. To listen to Guy Pearce deliver that dialogue on the concept of what memory is in Memento is hair raising itself.
You don't need an incredible physique and superhuman strength with overacted yelling to make this character seem interesting. This is the second disappointment in the post Sarfarosh Aamir era, Fanaa being the first.
The only peak of this film for me comes when Asin delivers a lecture on feminism. Its fine to make a romantic film on vengeance but please dont give the protagonist anterograde amnesia and then barely touch that concept.
Ghajini is yet another example of "Bollyvictimization".
