Review of Gettysburg (1993) by Matthew K — 21 Jul 2007
Masterful adaptation of Shaara's book. Movie is a bit slow at times, and will not appeal to the under-25 crowd unless they have an interest in the Civil War. Jeff Daniels is unlikely but marvelous in his role.
Interactions between Lee and Longstreet illuminate the decision-making and circumstances which ultimately led to Confederate defeat in this battle, and subtly highlights the "honor and glory"-based way of life coming to an end among the Southern aristocracy at this time.
Edelman's soundtrack is tremendous. There's a lot in this movie for those with the patience and interest to watch more than once.
