Review of Getaway (2013) by Daniel O — 20 Dec 2013
"ASSHOLE", you'll hear that phrase repeated many times during Getaway. It's a strange and abusive insult and, given that it is spoken by Selena Gomez, a former Disney starlet who plays Ethan Hawke's (The Purge, Sinister) sidekick in this fast paced thriller.
And yet, crucially, it doesn't mess up the film. Partly this is due to Gomez's surprisingly impressing performance as a hard girl, even though this is her debut in the thriller genre. But also due to good casting choices from director Courtney Solomon (even though that's one of the few things he gets right).
If you came here for a 'Taken' meets 'Fast and Furious' tale of hostages and car chases, you got in the right car. This is a story, less of good versus bad but how much you will do for love.
As everyone predicted, Getaway is a lot closer to Taken than a unique storyline: written by Gregg Maxwell Parker and Sean Finegan, Getaway has a very simple plot; the wife gets TAKEN, Brent Magna (Hawke) gets FURIOUS, He gets a phone call from a mysterious voice (John Voight) and has to follow all of his instruction whilst driving a FAST car to get his wife back, which happens to belong to The Kid (Gomez).
However, Getaway doesn't have the momentum to please the majority of crowds due to its unoriginal storyline. 3.5/5 (to be continued).
