Review of Get Shorty (1995) by Greg L — 24 Jul 2010
It's got a few good bits of amusing black humor, but like many movies about Los Angeles/Hollywood/the movie industry, it's gratingly smug and taken with itself. Travolta basically recycles all his old Vincent Vega mannerisms playing a character that wouldn't be out of place in a second-tier Tarantino rip-off, Gene Hackman is underutilized as a neurotic movie producer, and supporting performers Rene Russo and Dennis Farina play cardboard versions of typical Rene Russo and Dennis Farina-type characters respectively.
Just watch "Pulp Fiction" over again if you're in the mood for a mid-90's crime flick.
