Review of Get Out (2017) by Bob B — 29 May 2017
My wife did not like the movie, thought it was boring, overlong and not really a horror movie, but more of a comedy/thriller. oh, and she doesn't like looking at brian willam's daughter.
Overall, I enjoyed the movie. I thought the opening scene was unnecessary. but I guess you need it for the shock and awe. it felt a little forced. the movie had three openings. the cold opening. the weird tree line credit opening and then a jolt change into the basic credit sequence. that was a little off for me.
Like the blaxploitation feel. it felt old school. overall, the movie is a slow burn. it takes a lot of time for the main character to find out what's going on, etc. it seems that if you saw the trailer, you know where it's going and it may take too long to get there.
There were good weird moments that make you question what's going on. the comic relief was really good and had me laughing. but, I did feel the tense-feeling that one would have in this type of movie. liked some of the visuals that happens. it's not a great movie but it's good enough to watch in theatre with your lady. overall, the theme seems to be: watch out for those white women.
Okay, this part is more spoilerific stuff: I thought it was a bit slow pace. I was okay with it at times, but it seems like the reveal of the story could have been quicker. or there could have been more shock moments. I did like the sinking visual. that was really cool and fun.
I thought everyone was kind of creepy and weird. that was cool. all the twists I saw coming. don't know if everyone else did.
I thought the story was a bit thin and could have had more layers to it. but it said had an interesting message for me. I assumed the message was about racism and slavery and this is the wish, even for the liberal white folks. they want to trophy the black person.
I thought the finding of the box of pictures toward the end was too easy. why did the brian williams daughter leave it out to be found? I thought the finale happened too fast. wish it could be something more paced.
The deus ex machina was funny, but still seemed a bit too convenient. I wanted to have more of a misery moment where his friend would get caught too.
It's not important but I would like to have seen what happened after the credits. are there other communities who do this? at first I thought that flashing of the phone would take them out of their trance was too convenient, but I guess it works if people don't use flash photography in their little community.
Everyone was maybe too creepy. but I guess that helped with the storytelling.
Overall, as a first film I thought it was really good and interesting and had some good moments.
