Review of Get Out (2017) by Richard B — 30 Jun 2017
I'm not familiar with the director's work which is just as well if this film is anything to go by. It's sloppy and predictable. The result is a film that seems like it was thought up and jumbled together in a matter of hours.
It's a lousy shot at illustrating the racial problems in America and relies on tired and blatant old stereotypes to get the point across - not even touching on the subtler types of racism that persist today.
There was heavy use of dramatic music to try and build tension but in the end there was no helping the blocky script and a plot line so far fetched I wasn't sure if we were meant to accept the premise as one based in pseudoscience or enter into a world of nebulous surrealism, engaging in the suspension of disbelief.
It was all rather muddled and leaves the audience unsettled by too many unknowns and with a consequent apathy toward the plot. The overall feeling you get from the film is that of being force-fed cold porridge when you're not at all hungry.
The only redeeming factor was the performance of lead actor Daniel Kaluuya.
