Review of Get On Up (2014) by Vince B — 02 Aug 2014
Ok I've noticed some people are kinda mixed on seeing this movie, not because of Chadwick Boseman's performance but mainly on the director's choices on how to tell the story. For those of you who haven't seen the movie yet I'll say it's not told like Ray in chronological order in the events that happened to James, it jumps around and I thought I was gonna have a problem with that in the beginning of the movie but in the end it made sense.
Going back and forth shows how it ties together the man as we know James Brown. And I really don't know why people have a problem with the way it was told. Pretty much every autobiographical music film about an artist are pretty much the same, most have a hard beginning, a high success and a rocky road to hold on to it, then a revelation and then a change for the better until present day or they die.
That formula has been done over and over again. I think this movie gives us what James Brown wanted us to have the GROOVE. We know James had a gang of problems, so why rehash them touch on it and move on.
What this film is really about is the birth of the groove, the funk, and how it really came to be. And it's a reminder that if James didn't exist modern music wouldn't be what it is especially rap music.
