Review of Get Low (2010) by María A — 07 Feb 2012
"Get Low" 10 Scale Rating: 4.5 (Below Average) ...
Robert Duvall was repeatedly listed as an Oscar snub, and so was this film. After watching it, I have no idea why on either count.
Mr. Bush (Robert Duvall) is a recluse who lives in a cabin outside of a small Tennessee town. He is gruff, mean, and defends his land with shotgun blasts. A lot of stories and gossip is spread about him among the townsfolk, but Mr. Bush holds a dark secret. One day he wanders into town to request a funeral party for himself. Not for when he dies, but right now while he is still very much alive.
Well, here is problem number one: You don't care. Duvall does an acceptable job as Mr. Bush, but even he can't make the character interesting enough to care about. The slow pace of the movie and lack of solid characters to follow completely ruin the ending. Once Mr. Bush takes the stage to share his secret, you are just ready for the movie to be over.
Lastly, his secret isn't all that shocking or interesting either ...
