Review of Get Carter (1971) by Ross B — 15 Sep 2012
Mike Hodges write and directed this classic revenge tale that still has staying power. Michael Caine stars as Jack Carter, a powerful gangster from London who goes back to his hometown of Newcastle when he learns of the death of his brother.
While on the surface it looks like he died in a drunk driving accident, Carter seems to believe there is something more nefarious at foot. What he discovers though pushes him on a revenge rampage in which no one will be able to stop him.
Caine is great as the sleazy and villainous protagonist who will stop at nothing to seek the revenge he believes his brother is owed. The trouble with this movie is it is hard to keep track of who is who.
There are a lot of secondary characters and at times you forget everyone's relationship. The film does drag a smidge at points which makes it feel like the almost 2 hour film that it is. All in all, a great performance by Caine helps make this film a must watch.
