Review of Gerry (2002) by Christine B — 05 Jan 2008
I understand what Gus Van Sant, who is one of the weirdest directors out there, was trying to do with this film but it was just too painful to watch so I had to fast forward through some of it. Apparently it's 100 minutes long and has exactly 100 shots in it that last for 60 seconds each but I swear those 60 seconds feel like five minutes a piece.
Gerry is the story of two best friends who decide to go for a hike in the desert (no explanation given) with no food or water, get lost, trek through the merciless desert for days on end and one of them ends up dying at the hands of his best friend because he just can't go on and says to him, "I'm leaving.
" It's thoroughly depressing but the scenery is incredible and Affleck and Damon give sublime performances. This movie is definitely not mainstream and definitely not for most movie viewers. Oh, and there's hardly any dialogue.
