Review of Gerry (2002) by Russ B — 19 May 2008
I dont know why I love this movie, which sucks for me because ive been in many arguments with people who hated it, but nonetheless I did indeed LOVE it!
A) the cinematography is ridiculous! absolutely RIDICULOUS! if for no other reason you have to respect it for that.
B) the dialogue (despite how little there is) was perfect. entertaining. simple. human.
C) the story is so sad, and depressing, and maddening, and realistic.
The film is the story of two friends who get lost in the desert. They basically walk for several days trying to find their way out of the barren terrain while slowly going mad, and losing all hope, physically & mentally.
Watching this movie is almost the same experience. I'll full out agree that this movie is basically a bunch of beautiful shots that drag, often for more then 5 minutes at a time, capturing very little "story". what it does, I found, is capture the insecurity, devastation, and stress involved in being lost in the desert. The dialogue is often humourous and unrelated to the specific story, which I found very poignant. I think if I was lost in the desert I would do whatever I could to keep my mind off of it.
Anyways. you'll either love this movie, or like most you'll hate it. But you should watch it regardless and decide for yourself.
And yes, I know this review wasnt very helpful.
