Review of Gerald's Game (2017) by Michael T — 19 Feb 2018
I have watched many a horror movie in my life, but never have I felt more unsettled or insidiously creeped out by anything quite like Gerald's Game. On the surface the various horror aspects i.e. the moonlight man, the awaiting mongrel on the other side of the room brought with them enough tension to match your average horror flick, but what really brought the sense of dread out of the screen and into my mind was the rationalization that Jess had with her fractured psyche.
Everyone has kept themselves up at night senselessly scaring themselves with irrational thoughts of the macabre at one point or another, and the way the conversations Jess had with the projection of Gerald - 'Then why did the dog leave?' - drew unparalleled webs of paranoia that stuck with me well into the night.
