Review of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) by Lisa S — 25 May 2017
This thing is as shallow as a diamond ring, & every bit as infectiously appealing. Full of great one-liners & direction that perfectly times every song / joke cut, it takes difficult-to-love aristocrats & somehow makes them watchable.
Monroe is so specifically & hilariously in her element, with her iconic "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" number working as both iconic & fun within the larger context of her ditzy but empowered character.
Is it Hawks best? No, but that says little when talking about one of the greats.
