Review of Gentleman's Agreement (1947) by Simeon D — 25 Jun 2010
Powerful and stirring stuff. This must have been explosive back in the 40s but it still feels sharp, contemporary and relevant. An excellent cast keeps the action moving along at a good pace, with Gregory Peck on top form and strong support from Celeste Holm.
It doesn't take the simplistic black and white route, instead exploring the complexities of different types and levels of prejudice, and the impact on personal and social relatinships. Not quite To Kill a Mocking Bird, but still excellent.
