Review of Gattaca (1997) by Lance H — 05 Jun 2010
I think what I like most about this movie is the level of restraint shown. It's a creative decision probably spawned from the obvious low budget, but it completely works. The future of this society is obsessed with genetic perfection.
Gattaca tells the story of one man's struggle to reach for the stars (literally in this case) as well as the relationships he has with those close to him. There's obstacles in the form of the police, but mostly his own imperfections.
A futuristic tale of this sort works so well because you can believe a society like this. The film's a good reminder that beauty lies in imperfection. What you can achieve depends not on what you are, but who you are.
