Review of Gattaca (1997) by Tim P — 14 Oct 2018
Gattaca by Andrew Niccol is a great science fiction drama film that questions the ethics and practice of science. Starring Ethan Hawke, Jude Law and Uma Thurman this is a finely crafted movie which eschews fast action for a thoughtful approach to science fiction.
The production design is suitable and the yellowish tinged film stock adds to the theme and setting. Hawke plays Vincent- a genetically inferior man born by way of natural reproduction in a society where genetic tinkering has resulted in creating perfect human beings without many flaws.
Vincent wishes to go to one of Saturn's moon on an assigned mission but because he is an inferior he cannot. He uses the hair, urine and blood samples of Jerome who is a genetically gifted paraplegic, but without the knowledge of the administration whose rules demand that any person chosen to go to the mission must not be an inferior.
Gattaca is a very good movie the likes of which we seldom get to see. Watch it as soon as you can. (Andrew Niccol hits a homerun in his first film).
