Review of Gattaca (1997) by Robert H — 28 Aug 2010
A beautiful scifi film that spends very little on special FX as the beauty lies completely in the story and the characters portrayed by Ethan Hawke and Jude Law.
Heck, even Ernest Borgnine was beautiful in every scene he was in which weren't many. The clean sterile set pieces brought about an eerie sense of foreboding that a future such as the one portrayed in the film, might actually be possible. Everything seems so real that this thriller of sorts borders on being a horror film it's so scary. Just the thought that our society could become what we see in Gattaca makes my skin crawl.
Uma Thurman is used quite sparingly which I found odd for such a high caliber actor but her character doesn't really need to be there much more than she already is.
I did find that Hawke was a little too lacking in emotion most the time. Apparently in this society, when they fix your genes, they remove emotion cause everyone acted almost as sterile as the locations in which they were standing.
