Review of Gattaca (1997) by Andrew O — 30 May 2015
Haven't seen this techno thriller for a while. But---if all our medical records are collected by the government, maybe companies can only hire the "fit".
The "useless eaters" aren't quite that - they can sweep the floors, clean the toilets. But the good jobs are closed to them! .
But what if one guy can weasel his way into the BETTER jobs by sprinkling "good' DNA regularly on his workplace keyboard? (DNA is regularly checked so someone with an inferior ladder (supposedly lesser DNA) doesn't sneak into a good job.
Watch for Ernest Borgnine in a too-small role as one of the supposedly genetically "inferior" lower workers....His expressive face tells you how he feels about his exile to the lower rungs based just on his DNA. I think I saw a deleted scene with more Borgnine. I personally would restore that scene to the movie.
This thriller will probably assume even more significance as we move away from valuing all humans to ---exalting those supposedly genetically "superior" humans...
