Review of Gattaca (1997) by Tyler S — 09 Sep 2010
Of all the movies I've seen that depict crazy future scenarios, I would say the "not so distant future" depicted in Gattaca is by far the most likely. As a biology major it's not hard for me to imagine a day when we know which genes cause which problems in humans and how to fix them.
We've already done it with several species already. So a future in which people are born without any genetic defects is quite possible. It then stands to reason that genetically perfect people would be favored over genetically imperfect people.
Because of this, the premise of this movie was endlessly fascinating to me. The movie itself was also very well done. The cinematography and overall look of the movie was amazing. I loved Jude Law's character and he and Ethan Hawke interacted well together.
The plot wasn't perfect, especially near the end, but overall it was a very intriguing and entertaining movie.
