Review of Gattaca (1997) by Thomas A — 08 Nov 2010
Not the action-packed science fiction movie I anticipated, but definately still full of intense moments. It also lives up to it's tagline, "there is no gene for the human spirit".
I can't say there was anything spectacular about the acting, and the filming itself was simple; for the "science fiction" genre there were very few special effects, that is, little CGI, no prosthetic latex costumes, etc. The story is also not much more than many movies: a man with a dream.
But before you decide to pass over Gattaca with a glance at my brief review, let me remind you that none of these have yet been criticisms. The lack of over-the-top special effects and over-bearing acting is what gives this movie balance, and that balance is why I liked it. Good acting, good story, good delivery.
The story unravels somewhat slowly in a way that kept me engaged and interested, rather than bored. It's a movie that keeps you wondering, "how is this going to end?", and it persuades you to find out. And I'll say, it's worth findng out. The ending left me pleasantly surprised. It is an ending that makes you happy, but also makes you want to cry. Again, an excellent balance of emotion.
This movie promises nothing but gives plenty. It gives hope. It gives inspiration. It gives each of us another reason to dream again and never stop dreaming. If we always try our hardest, we will eventually suceed...
"I never saved anything for the swim back.".
