Review of Gattaca (1997) by Xsaris G — 18 Jul 2013
This is a unique and beautiful movie. Anybody that sees a problem with the story logic has not watched it with enough attention. He was born with defects because his parents chose to have a 'faith birth', or a birth that was not genetically engineered. His brother was born fully engineered. It is not a matter of money, it was a matter of the choice of his parents. Then he spent his life in an uphill battle against a society that treats 'faith birth' humans as second class citizens.
Eventually he turns to fraud and becomes a 'borrowed ladder' of someone else who has superior genetics. This allows him to get the job he wants and eventually his destiny. But none of this came easy and he nearly gets pinched in a murder investigation. The detectives look at 'invalids' as likely suspects, so when his DNA shows up at a crime scene (even though he is innocent), he becomes a prime suspect.
I see no hole in the plot or inconsistencies conceptually with this movie and anyone who does is simply not understanding the movie to begin with. Unlike more campy sci-fi movies that address this subject matter, this movie is elegant and clean, without hardly any CGI, and has emotive and deep elements to it as well. It over all has a calm tone, and requires attention to appreciate.
