Review of Gaslight (1944) by Brian S — 23 Jun 2011
A somewhat predictable but nonetheless incredibly satisfying thriller. Charles Boyer plays an absolute master of mind games and manipulation and Bergman is both naively trusting and recognizably strong.
a nice film debut for Lansbury as well. much as I enjoyed May Whitty's character, I didn't see how she was all that important to the overall story. I thought the very last scene was a bit contrived, too--a little too "campy happy ending" for my liking.
overall, though, a very solid and suspenseful film.
