Review of Garden State (2004) by Sam S — 12 Sep 2010
Movies have become much harder to relate to now-a-days, but Garden State happens to attain that feat. Zach Braff makes an impressive performance behind and in front of the camera as a young man returning home for his mother's funeral only to have to face all the problems he left. During his journey he ignites a flame with the always lovable Natalie Portman, and they manage to show raw emotion and a true connection on screen. What makes this movie work so well (besides the smart script and honest characters) is its perfect soundtrack. The only downfall Garden State has is it isn't sure if it is a comedy or trying to be romantic. At times it feels mixed, but if you just go with the flow it is hard to not enjoy.
