Review of Gangster Squad (2013) by Alex W — 07 Jul 2013
Surprisingly violent and more than a little ponderous, certainly loses steam in the middle - but strong performances from Gosling & Broden. As for Sean Penn he veers from overly melodramatic to overly covered in fake tan.
Certainly had all the ingredients for a decent gangster flick, but at the 90min mark it started to blur into one endless scene of black hats, sharp suits and unlimited rounds of ammo. Cliche dialogue didn't help the cause Emma Stone purrs on screen however.
You're left wondering what might have been, with just a few tweaks to the script and length.
