Goes for gritty violence but ends up overshooting its mark and landing in Cartoonland. When it tones that down, it's a lot of fun. Unfortunately, those reasonable moments are not always there, and it is punctuated by Sean Penn's mostly over-the-top screen-devouring performance.
Tone everything down, and we'd have a better picture.
