Review of Gangster Squad (2013) by Kelsey L — 21 Jan 2015

Gangster Squad isn't a bad movie. It is, however, a disappointing movie.

Here we have an all-star cast, most of which do quite well, but unfortunately this film does not accomplish what it seems to set out to do; establish itself as a noir-action flick. The beginning of the film attempts to establish itself as super stylized but this falls apart as soon as the plot picks up. Soon the action takes over and while it is entertaining, it basically stops all character development. Acting-wise everyone is pretty solid. Emma Stone is incredibly one dimensional but I feel like this has more to do with the writing and less to do with her acting.

So what do we have here? An exciting action movie that has good intentions but no follow-through.
