Review of Gangster No. 1 (2000) by Jon A — 10 Oct 2007
Let's take a movie, and absolutely cram it full of references to famous scenes from years ago, and release it at the same time that Lock, Stock and Snatch are sending shockwaves through the gangster genre, and see what we get.
Let's add a brutal murder scene, BUT...we have to play an extremely joyous song just for the irony. Hmm, that hasn't been done...*cough*Reservoir Dogs*cough*Clockwork Orange*cough*.
Until this movie reached this scene, I could barely even pay attention, the characters are so bland and unexciting. but once this scene hit, I turned the film off, because I knew right then that this entire flick had no hope and was made to trample on the success of the then-current trend in cinema.
Initially, I gave it two stars, because Paul Bettany is pretty bad ass, but McDowell's horrible attempt at voice-over knocked it down a notch.
Do yourself a favor and don't watch this.
