Review of Gangster No. 1 (2000) by Marilee A — 24 Jun 2011
The box sitting on the shelf at the video store for years looked like another cheesy, poorly titled straight to video, so what a surprise this was. Malcolm McDowell, in his usual over the top manner, portrays an old gangster who finds out his former boss is getting out of jail after a 30 year stint.
The film flashes back to 1968 mod-60's London, where Paul Bettany [bad guy in the shitty DaVinci Code] does a spot on portrayal of Malcolm as a young man. McDowell narrates the whole film, so there were moments where Bettany seemed to disappear, and McDowell's Alex of The Clockwork Orange took his place.
All elements were here for me, gangsters, a role worthy of McDowell, mod-60's setting, good soundtrack, I was completely entertained. Dig it.
