Review of Gangster No. 1 (2000) by Karl H — 17 Mar 2008
A rather obscure Brit Gangster film staring Paul Bettany (before he took off) and Malcolm McDowell. Both play a duel role of younger and older version of the nameless but sadastic gangster. Bettany is brilliant in this film, his acting shines over all the other cast members. He appears to relish playing such a evil, violent character.
The film shows in flashback format young Gangters rise to power by eliminating friend and foe alike until he reaches the top of the criminal mountain.
At the end it cuts to the modern era in which we see older gangster (Malcolm McDowell) confronting his past to devastating effect. The story line is gritty, a strong British cast, and a lead character that will frighten and thrill you at the same time. A Classic! Paul Bettany should only be allowed to play evil, he is so good at it.
