Review of Gangster No. 1 (2000) by Stephen C — 01 Oct 2008
During the tailwind of Lock stock there followed some truly dire wannabes in the Gangster genre (Rancid Alluminium step forward).
But there were some films which were unfairly overlooked.
Gangster No1 is one such film .
Dealing with the rise of the nameless Gangster (A excellent performance from Paul Bettany) the film is violent and evokes the period very well indeed.
Bettany shows here how good an actor he really is and with able support from David Thewlis,Saffron Burrows ,Jamie Foreman and the always great Malcom McDowell as the older Gangster the film makes other films in the genre seem tame by comparison.
An overlooked Brit gem which may yet be rediscovered.
