Review of Gangster No. 1 (2000) by Daniel B — 25 Jul 2009
I would say Paul Bettany steals the show, except Malcolm McDowell chews more scenery in his 10 minutes of screen time than Al Pacino does in the entirety of his average movie. Definitely a few homages to McDowell's role in Clockwork Orange.
But in terms of a cautionary tale of obsession, power-hunger, and the need to be #1, this is an entertaining and thorough denouncement of the hollowness of such victories. Deliciously violent morality tale.
