Review of Gangster No. 1 (2000) by Jim M — 15 Aug 2009
This has got to be one of the nastiest gangster flicks out there. Tells of Paul Bettany/Malcolm McDowell's unnamed Gangster's introduction into the circle of London crime boss Freddie Mays (David Thewlis) in 1968, and his subsequant rise to power.
Well David Thewlis is good as Mays the real star is Bettany. He channels McDowells crazy looks (convinving you that he is the younger McDowell) and excudes pure malevolence. This is not a nice guy, he plays him like a shark, without mercy or pity (see an extended victims point of view torture scene). Seriously the way Bettany plays this role, if he walked into a restaurant I'd be jumping out the back door. Defeintly one to check out.
