Review of Gangster No. 1 (2000) by Peter B — 30 Jul 2010
Dont like the c word? Stay well away from this then. Never heard it said so much. Paul bettany is chilling in this, hes the reason to see it. Otherwise its pretty standard stuff with the odd flash of brilliance (the victims eye view scene is shocking at the same time as being some kind of borderline filmmaking genius).
I found it a bit weird that bettanys is the only character played by a difrent actor in the latter part of the film. Took me outta the story a bit. Its an old tale performed brilyantly and directed with a confident grimy swagger that is like a british reservoir dogs meets scarface.
Good stuff.
