Review of Gangs of New York (2002) by Isaac H — 26 Feb 2012
Not as good as I was expecting, coming from Martin Scorsese. Unfortunately, this film is less than the sum of its parts, and does not feel like a cohesive unit as much as a patchwork of academy award nominations.
DiCaprio and Diaz both fail to deliver in terms of acting, painting portrayals of tasteless low lifes living in NYC. On the other hand, the set pieces in Gangs are spectacular, and every scene features Scorsese's artistic flair.
Daniel Day Lewis' portrayal of the butcher is the undisputed highlight of the film, creating a principled, yet barbaric archvillain.
