Review of Gangs of New York (2002) by Kilo D — 13 Nov 2013
Not one of Marty's best, thanks largely to a script that is (it's historical, a critic points out) predicable and too Hollywood, from the romantic side plot that nearly fizzles Lewis's spark out, the three-act-structure notes and plot points being hit loudly, and an ending only made worse by U2's touch.
However, Scorsese's meticulous visuals, and always working best with Mr. Ballhaus and topped with a wonderful production design, "Gangs of New York" is awesome--the editing transitions are insane, and the Kurosawa-like fight sequences are intense.
And but of course those three words: Daniel Day Lewis . . .
