Review of Gangs of New York (2002) by Jared S — 26 Jan 2014
As far as production is concerned this is one of the greatest films of all-time. The sets, costume designs, weapons/other props etc. all help in making this a period piece like no other.
I feel like a lot is covered in this incredibly long film, but it doesn't have much to say. The story is interesting although at times I think the film could use more attention to the narrative of Amsterdam assembling his gang and keeping his identity secret from Bill the Butcher. There is a lot more attention put on the historical backdrop of this story for something that is almost entirely a work of fiction.
The violence was surface level material, but admittedly I was fascinated by it. Flawed film, but compelling and well directed otherwise.
