Review of Gangs of New York (2002) by Jeff H — 15 Aug 2011
Had the power, but not the punch. Scorsese's direction is excellent as is Day-Lewis' performance. The screenplay however lacks a clear focus and the relationship between Diaz and Dicaprio is essentially puzzling, and neither of them give their best performances here.
The realistic depiction of the sketchy history of America is interesting and the plot is dramatic and great, although the movie just feels like it skims the surface instead of diving down and getting the depth that was available in the piece.
