Review of Ganga (1960) by Art S — 17 Nov 2015
This is a film introducing the UK to Indian culture in the 1950s, disguised as a simple coming of age tale. It doesn't rely on stereotypes or racist exoticism (like a slew of other British films at the time), but acts as a crash course on the lives and culture of the people who just left the empire.
It celebrates them and justifies their independence by following the story of a young British girl growing up in India. It allows the [British] viewer to relate to and sympathize with our main character, experiencing her first crush and heartbreak, and through her, learn love and respect another culture.
