Review of Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (1999) by Anthony L — 09 Mar 2007
Ok, now, we all know I'm a Godzilla fan, right? No other monster will ever mean as much to me as him. With that out of the way, I have to admit that this film is, without a doubt, the finest Kaiju film ever produced.
Everything, from the constant effects to the elaborate monsters to the emotional story to the epic music to the destructive battle scenes, EVERYTHING is perfect. You would be hard pressed to find a monster movie this exciting, or touching, or surprising.
And, unlike many sequels (particularly of the genre), this film ties into and wraps up the trilogy remarkably well. The only downside is that it ends frustratingly with a cliffhanger that, alas, will probably never be resolved.
Still, even as cliffhangers go, it somehow manages to feel like an ending, as opposed to making you feel cheated. Awesome movie!
