Review of Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (1999) by Wes S — 26 Jan 2012
My first experience of Gamera was via Mystery Science Theatre mocking one of the cheesy '60s films, so I was surprised to learn that many fans of daikaiju (giant monster) films thought this second only to the original Gojira.
I reserve that spot for The Host, but Revenge of Iris is a close #3. The film plays with many tropes of the genre, from the mystical to the mythic, from apocalyptic to teen angst. The scenes of destruction are riveting, and the story in between those moments is quite good.
Highly recommended for daikaiju fans.
