I think there should be an acknowledged "deadly tournament" subgenre by now, with this joining movies like The Running Man and Death Race. I liked this better than I thought I would, if mainly because of the relentless excess and outrageous imagery mainly associated with the "Society" parts, which for some reason had me thinking of The Fifth Element.
Other than that, the concept doesn't feel very new - and neither does the movie itself.
