Review of Gamer (2009) by Bobby L — 03 Oct 2011
Wow this movie was horrible. I mean really bad. I can't believe they got Gerard Butler to agree to this. The directors just kept laying on the cheese - I understand the need to make statements about the direction of society...but that was what really made this movie bad. Is it an action movie? Or is it designed to make statements about society? I expected an action movie, but then I got attempts at making statements about society and where social media, video games, etc. are taking us. Honestly, both of these things can work in a movie - but only if it doesn't come of as cheesy. Cheese throws your believability right out the window. Gamer completely fails, where I personally think that Surrogates succeeded. (At least on the statements about society end). And sure, there were some cool action sequences - but every single one was constantly interrupted by the static effect...we know that it's like a video game - but really, every 15 seconds reminding us?
So I guess that's the bottom line, Surrogates is a much better movie trying to send this same message, and there are hundreds of better strictly action movies out there. This is the first movie in a while that I actually regret watching.
