Review of Gamer (2001) by Lee B — 06 May 2011
Gamer felt like the people who made it kept telling themselves, "We're so edgy! We're so in-yo-face! Those dummies who love Halo and Call of Duty are gonna love this movie!" Ugh. Gamer was interesting to look at, and that's about it.
The acting was decent. Gerard Butler had his muscles, Michael C. Hall had his, um, jazz, Kyra Sedgewick had her journalistic integrity, Ludacris had his Max Headroom moment and the stereotypical gamer dude had his folds of fat and dippable slices of waffles.
The story was confusing, and for some reason, I thought the players in the game (i.e. Gerard Butler) were fighting in a war. That at least would give the players a greater sense of redemption and contribute to the dystopian feeling of the movie.
But no, it's just for fun and jollies until...wait for it...it's game over. Dun dun dun.
