Review of Galaxy Quest (1999) by Jason J — 13 Jun 2010
A very funny spoof on the science fiction genre but it also an action sci-fi movie in itself based on the Star Trek series. A set of hammy TV actors turn up for a sci-fi convention only to be met by real aliens who, having only seen them on TV, mistake them for a real space crew.
Tim Allen as Commander Taggart mimicks Captain Kirk really well alongside Sigourney Weaver but it's Alan Rickman as the dour miserable science officer who steals the movie for me. Rickman gets a lot of laughs.
Galaxy Quest is also a great satire on sci-fi fans and the conventions they attend. Most of all though it pays tribute through comedy to one of the greatest TV shows ever. An original and hugely entertaining movie.
Two thumbs up.
