A parody that's smart and hilarious. Spoofing Star Trek, the film's story is about the cast of a sci-fi TV show are mistaken as the real thing by a race of aliens, and are transported up into space to fight another race of aliens, facing numerous and hilarious dangers, as well as challenging friendships and revealing the awful truth to the aliens the cast is trying to help.

The film has great set designs and satire, thanks to Dean Parisot's direction, and David Howard and Robert Gordon's script. The film uses parody in an intelligent way, unlike many parodies, such as transporter malfunctions for non-human beings, and the incompetence of the Thermians (the alien race the cast are helping).

The film has nonstop laughs and even some heart to boot, along with some clichés from other genres that work thanks to great characterization and development. The film is also well-acted, with Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and Alan Rickman creating most of the laughs of this film thanks to perfect scene-stealing and timing.

The film would've been funnier if it was the original R-rated or even PG-13 version without the violence but the worse language or most of it put back in (you obviously notice the mouthing and the words don't match in some scenes but laughed anyway).

A parody worth watching if you want to watch parodies not made by very well-known film makers.
