Review of Futureworld (1976) by Samantha W — 31 Mar 2010
Welcome to Futureworld, full of good old cheesy/campy sci-fi action and the weirdest sex dream sequence that makes you wonder, "How much were those filmmakers smoking?".
All you need to know about the plot, which isn't much because this is, like, a B-movie, is that its main characters are reporters, played by Peter Fonda and Blyhte Danner (who is almost as obnoxious as her daughter was in Sky Captain and the World of tomorrow) who are sent to report on the newest robotic theme park. Apparently, at the last robotic theme park, some shit went down, so the parks could really use some good PR. Of course, Peter Fonda's reporter is convinced there's a conspiracy, so of course, there is one: the creators of Futureworld want to replace worldleaders with robots (gasp!).
This is a B-movie, nothing more, nothing less. It is some harmless fun right out of the 70's. The dialogue is at times atrocious, the acting is either over the top or just right for B-movie fair, and the action sequences are lame, but in a way we B-movie lovers have come to cherish.
All else you need to know is that this is a sequel to Westworld, and from what I've heard, Westworld is awesome. This, compared to Westworld, is not awesome, and some people even get as far as being offended by it.
I gave it a 40% because this same scale is used to judge films like Gone With the Wind and Casablanca. And, honestly, everyone knows this is a B-movie, and with B-movies, who the hell cares about reviews? This is on hulu right now, which is legal and free, so I highly (cough cough) recommend checking it out there.
